Details:

A workaround for existing man(1) implementations that came with a feature
introduced in 2002 ceased being necessary sometime after 2005, when
then-current releases of man-db man and Lucifredi man reached even the most
ancient of long-term-support "enterprise Linux" releases.

See attached patch. I'm testing it now.

...and follow-ups.

The problem was already fixed and known to be fixed in the latest version of
Brouwer/Lucifredi man, but the 1.6 release was "too new"!
